This prominent residence was constructed in 1877 by Thomas Henry Smith and his wife, Anna. Thomas was influential in shipbuilding, quarrying and in retail coal in Sturgeon Bay. Following in his footsteps, son Leathem D. Smith was born and raised in this elegant home.
In 1956, the house was purchased by George F. Paul and his wife, Sarah. Together they established the Colonial Inn, one of the first inns in Door County. In 1960 the home was purchased by Dr. John Tong, dentist, and converted to a personal residence. In 1995 it was beautifully restored by Debra and Joseph Hertel as Colonial Gardens Bed and Breakfast.
